Nicolas Ghesquière caught the fashion world by surprise on Monday when it was announced he will leave Balenciaga after a 15-year run at the French fashion house. Who will fill this daring designer’s shoes?
New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn reported that Nicolas may have left Balenciaga due to issues with financing and a more commercial drive on some of the Balenciaga’s lines. Perhaps that is why Alexander Wang, the edgy, downtown (and very commercial) designer that is a favorite of fashion editors is being mentioned as a possible replacement. Grazia reports that the 28-year old American designer is a “hot favorite.”
Meanwhile, designers Mary Katrantzou and Christopher Kane have also been mentioned as possible successors. One thing is for sure: the next designer chosen for Balenciaga will have some big shoes to fill, following the spring 2013 collection that hit the runway in late September and has been roundly praised by journalists.
Do you think Alexander Wang is a good choice for Balenciaga?
