Gabby Takes Essence

Sixteen-year-old Olympian Gabby Douglas has been living out her dreams ever since she snagged up two gold medals earlier this year. She’s gracing the cover of the December 2012 issue of Essence as one of their “Women of the Year”, but she also shares an alternate cover with fellow Olympians Carmelita Jeter, Allyson Felix, and Sanya Richards-Ross. All four ladies share the accomplishments of breaking records and becoming a part of history in their sports.

We’ve already learned a bit about Gabby, but let’s meet the other three girls:

Carmelita Jeter’s website dubs her “the fastest woman in the world.”  During this year’s Games, she became the only athlete to medal in both the 100 and 200 meter races, winning silver and bronze, respectively.

Allyson Felix boasts the title of most decorated female track athlete at this year’s Olympics. She won 3 gold medals; 1 individual in the 200 meter race, 1 with her teammates including Carmelita in the 4×100 meter race, and one with Sanya and others for the 4×400 meter race. With her 3 golds, it was the most golds for a female track athlete since 1988.

Sanya Richards-Ross
won 2 golds in London, 1 in the 400 meter race, and 1 with teammates, including Allyson, in the 4×400 meter relay. Sanya is recognized as one of the most decorated female track athletes ever. She won gold in the 4×400 relay in 2004, 2008, and 2012. After leading the world in the event for the past couple of years, Sanya became the first American woman in 28 years to win the 400 meter dash in the Olympic Games.

The 27-year-old is married to two-time Superbowl champ Aaron Ross and has plans to star in an upcoming reality show which will air on WE TV.

Earlier this year, Sanya made news and caught a little backlash for being glammed up while on the race track, however, she has stated that her job makes her no different than other women who want to look good while they are at work.

I love putting my face on and doing my hair before I step out on the track. I’m working — that’s my job. And doesn’t every woman like to look pretty when they’re on their job? And millions of people are watching me do it, so I don’t pay attention to that stuff.

Pick up Essence Magazine to read more about Gabby and the rest of these ladies. They are definitely “Black Girls Who Rock”!
